At WES Ltd we do not just advise on new or replacement systems, we can also assist with the refurbishment of existing ones.

This particular client (Nursery School in Essex) with a Packaged Sewage Treatment Plant, believed to be over 16 years old that was failing its Environment Agency Permit as the quality of the effluent was significantly above the limit and causing a pollution to the nearby river, resulting in them being threatened by the EA with closure and fines.

We were engaged to project manage the situation and the first step was to liaise with the EA to enable some time to be given to rectify the problem, they gave us an 8 week period which sounds a long time however, to get a failing system replaced and working from this position to producing high quality effluent can take 6 months or more.

Our client had previously been advised by another company that the only solution would be to ‘rip it out and start again’, with a potential outlay of over £100K and considerable upheaval to the nursery.

Working with our service contractor partner Lemon Drainage Services Ltd, we set about investigating the process and the reason for the failure and were able to effectively re-build the internal workings to a modern specification that removed the pump driven system and installed an air blower system, delivering the air flow directly to the base of the biological zone via fine bubble diffusers.. considerably more efficient and effective.

As can be seen from the before and after pictures the system is now producing high quality effluent that is cheaper to run and consistently in accordance with the Environment Agency permit, for a fraction of the replacement costs and without impacting on the nursery operation.
